Grateful published on Purchase

Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.  Genesis 2:7

One of my favorite things to do when I visit my parent’s farm in Virginia is to look at the night sky.  It’s far enough away from any major cities that you can actually see the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon.  From my youth, this view has always filled me with a sense of wonder.  It amazes me that God is bigger than this universe that I only get a glimpse of.  Perhaps even more amazing is the belief that in the vast expanse of space and time, God should care for even me.

I am not a scientist, but I appreciate the discoveries and theories made in the scientific world that attempt to tell us of our origins.  I do not see these as competing with the biblical narrative.  Science and faith are asking different questions.  It is not a stretch to make the faith claim that God intentionally created the universe and all that is in it, while also claiming that scientific discoveries inform us just how that creation played out.  For instance, it fascinates me that scripture claims God formed humanity from the dust of the ground, and then recent scientific discoveries claim that 90% of the human body is comprised of star dust (do some research on it!).  There’s a beautiful connection between our bodies and the vast expanse of the universe!

I’m doing a lot of traveling this summer, so the comics and commentary will be more brief than usual.  But I’d love to hear where your understanding of science has opened your mind about God’s love for creation!
