Can’t Wait for Aldersgate

Can’t Wait for Aldersgate published on Purchase

Wesleyans around the globe and across denominations celebrate the day of John Wesley’s so-called conversation story on May 24.  For it was on that fateful day in 1738 that our fearless founder did stumble wearily into a small meeting of Christians on Aldersgate Street and hear the gospel through the reading of Martin Luther’s preface on the Epistle to the Romans.  And upon hearing those glorious words did John Wesley find, to the delight of all future Methodists, his heart was strangely warmed.

But the days, if not the better part of the year leading up to that strange warming were full of searching and despairing that perhaps John was only a Christian in form and practice, but not in reality.  After a devastating failure of a mission to the American colonies, John and Charles Wesley leaned deep into the Moravian community back home, hoping to find the faith that they seemed to have in the face of life’s literal and figurative storms.  Charles Wesley had his conversion moment on May 21, while worried that his illness might kill him, he finally made the big move to trusting that God’s salvation had nothing to do with all that Charles himself had done to please God.  Only a few days later did John also reach that conclusion, not perhaps by his own pragmatic logic, but more deeply in his bones…or rather, his strangely warmed heart.

This week, I’m sharing some new comics with you though they are intentionally more a return to form of the original Wesley Bros back when I began in 2013.  They are ridiculous, esoteric, and I’d love to know that I’m not the only person who thinks they’re funny, but wouldn’t be surprised.  So instead of “submitting to be more vile,” perhaps this week’s tagline is “stupid comics for smart Methodists.”

Happy Aldersgate Day you crazy people called Methodist.
